The situation is just so complicated that I don’t know what to do about it!”

This was the opening statement from a friend who is going through a really tough time. He’s trying his best to deal with it in a way that brings peace and resolution, but it just seems to get worse at every turn. The pressure feels overwhelming and he is stressed!

Here is how God helped my friend to find relief and a solution by looking at the situation from Heaven’s perspective, instead of his own.

My friend (we’ll call him John) and I were talking through the situation that he is facing and I could see that it was really getting him down. I know what it’s like to be dealing with a seemingly insurmountable issue at work or in my relationships, feeling the weight of trying to solve it, but nothing seems to be working. We’ve all ’been there and done that’ right?

As we were processing through what is going on, I remembered two questions that I always ask God when I am facing something…

“God, what’s really going on here?”

“What am I supposed to do about it?”

These two questions have evolved over the years as God has helped me unpack verses like Eph 6: 10-12 where the Bible tells us that our fight isn’t against flesh and blood, but against the enemy and what he’s trying to hurt us with. He goes on to tell us to be strong in Him; giving us tools to use to stand firm and not be overwhelmed by the onslaught. Jesus also promised us that we can come to Him when things are heavy and He will help us deal with them in a way that results in resolution and rest.

As ‘John’ and I talked through these promises, we remembered that the solution to this situation was beyond his ability to deal with. That’s the point. He can’t deal with it precisely because it’s not his to bear!

I could see hope returning to his face and a massive weight being lifted off his shoulders.

What a great promise Jesus gave us in Mat 11: 28-30 (MSG)

“Are you tired? Worn out? Burned out on religion?
Come to me.
Get away with me and you’ll recover your life.
I’ll show you how to take a real rest.
Walk with me and work with me—watch how I do it.
Learn the unforced rhythms of grace.
I won’t lay anything heavy or ill-fitting on you.
Keep company with me and you’ll learn to live freely and lightly.”

The loving invitation is clear. Will you accept?
Food for thought:
– Spend some time thinking/asking Jesus what is really going on in your situation? Ask him to show you Heaven’s perspective.
– Then ask Him what His invitation is to you? What does He want to do about the situation WITH you?

In Part 2 we will go through some practical steps to help process this through with Jesus.
